Design Types talks with Seton Kim of design firm REZN8 about his thoughts on their recent project for Fox Sports. Kim also gives tips to design freelancers when creating graphics packages.
REZN8’s NEW FSN LOOK
First off, will you please introduce yourself Seton Kim Senior Creative Director, REZN8
To start, name some recognizable REZN8 projects besides the new FSN look? REZN8’s been around for over 20 years so we’ve worked on everything from CBS to SciFi, and from the Super Bowl to the Academy Awards. We’ve designed for Microsoft including their WMV HD, HD DVD and Games for Windows IDs, as well as their DX10 “Evolved” vision video. Some of our more recent projects include: the PromaxBDA 2007 show open, FSN NBA Package, Super Bowl XLII PreGame Spot for Fox Sports, the 2008 Entertainment Tonight and The Insider HD packages, as well as Spike’s UFC Fight Night Live.
How long have you been designing projects for FOX Sports/FSN? We’ve had the pleasure of working with them for over 10 years.
In the new FSN look what software was used? Specifically what was used for the 3D work? Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects and 3D Studio Max.
What did you want to accomplish visually when creating the FSN animation package? (example: a team open) We wanted to capture the sense of being in a massive arena/stadium, at the start of a major sporting event. Our biggest challenge was to create a unique system that would allow the package to be customized to different teams and sports. We accomplished that by twisting the notion of a sports ticker and mashing it with a deconstructed jumbo tron.
What’s your favorite part of the new FSN look? It’s hard to call out anything in particular, but one of it’s strengths is the contrast between the massive structures and environment to the detail and graphic filigree in the animated tickers. There’s a nice balance between making you want to take a step back while visually drawing you in.
In your experience what is a pro and con of designing for the Chyron Duet and Vizrt? The main benefit of those systems is the real-time graphics generation. The biggest hurdle is the loss of production quality in execution. The key is to understand the limitations of those systems and to intelligently design work arounds that simulate the quality of pre-rendered graphics.
What advice would you give to a freelance designer when creating a graphics package? Focus on the message. The solutions need to speak to the client and their audience, otherwise no level of complexity, production or style will be adequate.
Anyone you’d like to thank? Thanks goes to all of our clients, past & present and those who appreciate our work…
