If you visit the Chyron booth at NAB you can’t help but notice a crowd of people around a TV. They’re all wearing dark glasses and staring at a blurry screen. To my surprise it was highlights from the 2009 NBA All-Star Game in 3D! It was exciting to watch Dwight Howard win the slam dunk contest in 3D. I was impressed…
Then a graphic popped up. As a designer, this was more impressive than Superman dunking. It was in true 3D floating in front me. If you look at the pictures it’s blurred and looks strange but that’s similar to the output’s appearance.
Chyron tells me they created a plugin for Lyric Pro that converts a graphic or animation in real-time into a 3D image. They also mentioned the Duet graphics operator on-site wore the 3D glasses while working.
According to Chyron’s press release it was the, “first commercially marketed deal to deliver an NBA sporting event in Live 3D nationwide.” Chyron partnered with NBA, Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp., Turner and Pace.
